Everyone:
Well, this e-mail may be a bit longer than usual due to the unusual Preparation Day schedule. Starting with Sunday of last week... Sunday of last week we talked with a young adult at the SG2 ward named Miguel Nunoz (that second n has a tilde over it) who someone told us wasn't a member. We ended up inviting him to a baptism that was happening that afternoon, so we went and waited for him, but he never came. It turns out his car broke down, so he wasn't able to come. I did hear that Rito, who I was teaching while I was back in Westchester, did indeed get baptized that day, as well.
Monday of last week we took one of the young men from the SG2 ward named Jesus (with an accent mark over the u) out with us. We tracted for a while, and in the evening we taught Marcelino. Marcelino is doing pretty well--he says he can see how his days go better and he feels good as he's reading the Book of Mormon, so we're pretty excited for him.
We had Zone Conference on Tuesday. It was a good Zone Conference--Elder Lund of the Seventy taught most of it. He talked about improving our teaching, helping our investigators develop faith, and following the Spirit. That ended up taking most of the day.
On Wednesday we contacted some referrals and visited Sherri again. Sherri is doing very well--she's very excited about being a member, and she is looking forward to fulfilling her new calling. More on that later.
We also got a call in the middle of the night from Elder Hoskin telling us that we were going to be doing some service at the temple the next day.
On Thursday we got up early and went up to the temple with our zone. The temple is having its cleaning time last week and this week, so we helped out with that. Elder Allred and I polished the oxen around the baptismal font and vacuumed in the men's dressing room. We also visited Norman.
On Friday I was on splits with Elder Thurston in his area. We did some good work--this is Elder Thurston's first transfer, so I was helping him out a bit with his Spanish and such.
On Saturday we went to do some service for Sherri, but she told us she wasn't ready yet so we rescheduled for next week. We also visited a couple less-actives and contacted a referral.
Sunday we had church, of course, and we were pretty excited when both Marcelino and Miguel were there at SG2 ward. We also talked with a man named Melvin in the SWLA branch that turned out to not be a member and live in our area, so we arranged a meeting with him, too. In the afternoon we tracted a bit and visited Hermana Smith. We also helped out President Allen (The SWLA branch president) by working on tracking down some less-actives that had apparently moved into our area some time.
This morning we actually went over and taught a referral, and then we played kickball with our zone.

Both good and bad news
It's been a difficult week for us. We just found out today that the Cally and Jed's adoption of Harvey will be contested at trial. No date is set yet. At a court hearing today, the judge said he needs more information to make a decision. Please keep them in your prayers.
Some other good news for us is bad news for Mom and Dad. Jake's boss countered with an offer that he could not pass up, so they will not be moving to Logan after all. So we will still get to see them weekly.
Toby had complications from his surgery over the weekend. His cyatic nerve slipped over the pin in his leg and was causing him excruciating pain. They had to do more emergency surgery and we thought for a time that we would lose him. He got to come home last night and today he is doing much better.
Creed and Anette are both back in school. Somehow it just seems wrong to start so early.

Sammy's mission e-mail Aug 18, 2007
This e-mail will be a bit shorter than usual, since this is just Saturday and I forgot to bring my agenda with me to remind me about what I did this week.
Monday evening we contacted a referral named Marcelino. He's an elderly Latino who's having some difficult times and seems glad to talk with us. We've already been back to visit him twice.
On Tuesday we tracted some... and we went to the Libro de Mormon clase... And I don't really remember what else we did.
On Wednesday I was on splits with Elder Hoskin, my District Leader, in his area, which is just to the west of mine. We had a pretty good day, and I got to help him with his Spanish, since he doesn't speak very much Spanish. I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before--until March of this year (the month I arrived in the mission), the mission was split into English missionaries and Spanish missionaries. However, in March it became a bilingual mission, meaning that all the missionaries are to speak English and Spanish (except for the handfull who speak Korean or American Sign Language), so all the missionaries that used to speak just English have been having to learn Spanish. Elder Hoskin is one of those missionaries. But, we had a pretty good day, and things went well in Watts, too.
On Thursday we had our usual weekly planning, visited Norman, tracted a little bit, and had our correlation meeting with SG2.
On Friday we had our district meeting in the morning. I don't remember if I'd mentioned this before, but it just so happens that Elder Pepper, my MTC companion, has district meetings in the same building we do, so we've been enjoying seeing each other and catching up these last few Fridays. After that, we tracted some and visited Marcelino again (Elder Allred and Elder Thurston, Elder Hoskin's companion, visited him on Wednesday). He's been enjoying reading the Libro de Mormon (Book of Mormon), and is planning on coming to church on Sunday.
Well, that's it for now. I may write some letters to grandparents and aunts and uncles and such today if I have time, so consider yourselves warned (ha, ha).

Week 12 August
This was an exciting week for us, as Flint said it looks like Jacob and Lindsey will be moving to Cache Valley. Jacob wants to buy a place with enough land to have horses. I'm looking forward to having someone close that I can put to work when I need help. Of course having Katelynn and the new baby will also be nice. We look forward to getting better acquainted with Lindsey, she seems to be such a good person. I don't think Jacob could have made a better choice. I will also have someone to go fishing and hunting with occasionally.
Our Peaches are on and we spent yesterday canning peaches and we will also do some more tomorrow. This is such a great time of year when we have all the fresh veggies and fruit.
Dad is right it is a great time to have all the fresh things to eat. The canning is not so fun until you start eating it in the winter, especially the peaches. We have blackberries next and plucots to take care of. I have said, "No more fruit trees! We have enough and to spare." There is a wild plum along the road and he wants to dig a piece up but I say no. He can pick them where they are and leave some for someone else.
Denisa, your pictures didn't come through again. Anyway we saw the kayak.
LaDawn, send us a copy of the pictures you took while here. The ones Dad took disappeared when he tried to load them to a CD that was defective. Love Mom
I'm going to try to attach a couple of pictures just to see if they go through. The first picture is one that we took at Hardware Ranch last winter of Sam. The second we copied out of the paper. We had a brief rain shower and when we went outside we saw the double rainbow. I took some picture of it but I couldn't get it all in one picture so will use this one instead.

Happy Friday
The canoe looks great. Unfortunately there aren't too many good canoeing waters around here and I am getting too old to handle them by myself. And of course there is never enough time to do all of the fun things.
It looks like Jake and Lindsay are going to be moving up near Mom and Dad. Jake is going to be the finance manager at a GM dealership in Logan. We will miss having them so close but at least it isn't a thousand miles away in Texas. I imagine it means we will be traveling up that way a lot more often.
After several years in Scouts, I finally got a new calling Sunday. I'm now the executive secretary. We have a huge ward so it is going to be a lot of work.

Samuel's Mission e-mail Aug 13, 2007
Everyone:
Well, I've been here in Watts for another week. Starting with Thursday of last week: On Thursday we taught the Williams family again, visited Norman again, and had correlation with SG2.
On Friday we had our District meeting--which reminds me, Elder Pepper, my MTC companion, happens to have his district meetings in the same building our district meets in, so even though he's in a different zone still, I still see him once a week. He's been enjoying his mission so far, and interestingly enough, his current companion was Elder Allred's MTC companion. After District meeting we tracted for a while, taught Sherri about the role of the priesthood and the auxiliary organizations in the church, and visited some less-actives.
On Saturday we tracted for a while, tried to visit people who weren't home, and visited a couple other less-active families.
On Sunday we had our normal church meetings, tracted for a little bit, and then we went over to Westchester because one of the (formerly less-active) brothers in the Westchester ward was baptizing some of his neighbors whom I had talked with! Apparently, as soon as I left Westchester, the work really picked up there.
Today, we bowled for our zone activity and went grocery shopping.
I found an interesting scripture in John 4:37-38:
37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.
Missionary work really works in this fashion. It's very rare that we both sow and reap--usually, one companionship will sow, another water, another fertilize, and another reap. Oftimes the seed we sow now will lie dormant for many years before it yields increase. I think I read somewhere in the MTC that most people that get baptized have an average of seven separate contacts with the church before their baptisms. Which means that it really helps when the members are making some of those contacts, because there's a lot more members than full-time missionaries.

Samuel's Mission e-mail Aug 8, 2007
Everyone:
I realized when I looked at the mission calendar that I hadn't mentioned that we were going to have our temple day this week, so that's why this e-mail is late (like it says, it's not because I got shot). Anyways, I've really been enjoying my time here in Watts thus far. I actually don't really feel scared around here. Of course, we don't tract when the sun is getting low, and we generally steer clear of the "Projects", and there are almost always sirens in the distance, but on the whole, as long as you don't do anything against the rules, you're fine around here.
Starting with Tuesday of last week: Tuesday last week we had to get a new tire for our car since we managed to drive over a nail earlier on. We also tracted some, and we went to the Libro de Mormon (Book of Mormon) class that all the missionaries in the South Gate 2nd ward hold for investigators.
Wednesday of last week we tracted, visited an Hermana (Sister) to do a bit of service for her, and tried to visit people who weren't home (This activity seems to be a constant in missionary life, from my experience.)
On Thursday we taught the Williams family, a referral we contacted my first day here in Watts that we have pretty high hopes for. As we've been talking with them, it seems that one of the daughters actually had some of the missionary lessons before--she recognized 3 Nephi 11. Then we had our weekly planning, visited Norman, a member who's in a convalescent hospital in our area, and visited Sherri Thompson to arrange a time for her baptismal interview (we arranged it for Friday). Then we had our correlation meeting with the South Gate 2nd Ward (henceforth SG2, since I'm getting tired of typing South Gate 2nd Ward). Correlation for SG2 is interesting, since there are eight companionships serving in the ward area, so the correlation meetings are fairly lengthy.
Friday we had our District Meeting, and then we picked up a youth from the SG2 ward named Jesus (there's and accent mark on the u, but I don't know how to add that in this text box). He came with us while we tracted that day, and when we visited Sherri in the evening and told her that her interview had been moved to Saturday.
On Saturday Sherri got her baptismal interview with President Blackburn (the mission president), and she passed! Then we tracted most of the day, and visited a less-active family in the evening.
On Sunday we had our normal church meetings--the way we cover both SG2 and the SWLA (Southwest Los Angeles) Branch is that one of us goes to SG2 with either our district leader or his companion while the other one of us stays at SWLA with the other. Then in the afternoon, Sherri got baptized! The baptismal service went very well--we even had good support from the branch, which is apparently rare due to the small size of the SWLA branch.

News from Flint and Anette

It’s hard to believe the summer is nearing an end. Anette is already working everyday to make sure her classroom is ready for the start of school. She and Creed both go back to school in less than two weeks.
Creed and I survived the pioneer trek in July. I was only able to walk about half of the 22 miles on my bad ankle. It was a great experience and helped us appreciate what our pioneer ancestors endured.
This month has been eventful for us. We started out entertaining some old friends, Jim and Karen Troupis. We went fishing, visited the Thanksgiving Point Gardens, had dinner at the Roof in Salt Lake and spent a day in Park City. It was really an enjoyable and wonderful time. We said goodbye to them on Wednesday morning.
That afternoon, Craig and LaDawn and their family came to visit. We had a great couple of days with them as well. Katelynn and Rachel kept us all entertained. They squealed and screamed and ran non-stop for hours. We saw the dinosaur museum and had squirt gun fights at the park. We played with the dogs and rode the horses in the mud. We hated to say goodbye.

We hated to say goodbye.
Unfortunately a couple of days later we had a tragedy. We were coming home from a quick horseback riding session in Alpine. We had the dogs in the back of the truck. They usually ride in the back seat but they had gotten very muddy. On the way home Toby jumped out of the truck and got hit by the horse trailer.
There were no internal injuries, but he had a compound fracture of his femur. He ended up needing orthopedic surgery. They put a metal rod inside the bone and a metal plate, screws and wire on the outside of the bone. Fortunately the procedure went well and he seems to be recovering just fine. Once again it was wonderful to have Jenine and Brandon’s veterinary experience and connections.
Cally and Jed are settling into their role as parents. Anette had a baby shower for Cally at our house last night and everyone got to meet Harvey. He is growing fast and is already looking like a little boy and not just an infant. They are trying to sell their house and have already found a new one just the other side of the freeway from where they live now.
Jacob and Lindsay are getting ready for their new baby in December. It is going to be a boy. They are currently practicing with a litter of puppies. Katelynn is going to be a big help with her new baby brother. She loves to hold baby Harvey and the new puppies.
Jenine and Brandon are getting ready for school again. Brandon is still at BYU and Jenine is going to be getting an associate’s degree in a veterinary program. We see them often and are not looking forward to the time when they have to move so Brandon can go to dental school.

I did some searching on the help menu and found out why we have all been having trouble posting pictures. --We have been trying to put up pictures that are too big. Everyone needs to use a picture editing program and save any pictures they want to post to a lower resolution so that they don't take up too much room. We can only put up to 1 MB into any one page, so if you have several pictures to post, compress them and then break them into more than one post to keep them below the limit.

12 July 2007 Texas trip - Ruth and I spent the last two weeks in Texas with LaDawn and Denisa' family. This was an unusual trip in that it rained every day that we were in Texas. This was the first time we have visited Texas when the temperature in Cache Valley was hotter than in Texas. It was in the 80’s while we were in Texas with 70 to 100 percent humity and in the low to mid 90’s in Cache Valley.
Khadajah and Melena both turned 8 in June and were baptized on 1 July. John baptized them and they asked me to confirm them. We took several pctures of the family. John’s mother Barbara Moore came out for the baptism.
We also attended a presentation for the 4th of July in which the whole Dalley Family were involved.
We went to Fort Worth one day and visited the museum where they had a special
display of the Star Wars materials. I took Kjirstina and James to a rifle range for their combined birthday where they both did pretty well and I think they enjoyed themselves.
It rained so much that we were unable to take Denisa' kayak out because of the
flooding.
On our return to Utah were detoured to visit Flint and to see Cally and Jed's new baby, Harvy. They are in the process of adopting him.
2 August 2007 LaDawn, Craig and family have been visiting with us since
Monday. They arrived about 8:30 pm and we had a turkey dinner prepared for them.
Tuesday we took the kids to Stokes Nature Center up Logan Canyon in the morning and we went up Smithfield Canyon in the afternoon so the kids could wade in the water. James didn’t want to go because he said it wouldn’t be any fun but when we got ready to come home he was the one who wanted to stay.
Wednesday, we went to Salt Lake to visit the church sights. The down town area across from the temple realy look odd about half of the buildings are gone making way for the new church
center. We ate lunch at the ZCMI food court. For some reason they have left that in place even though the rest of the building is now empty. While we were there --- Fouk, who was the Assistant Scout Master in Newarl ward when Chuck McMarrow was there. He joined the church at that time. His now the long term Scoutmaster there and had fifteen scouts with him. They were going on a super activity of climbing in the Teton Mountains. We were really surprised to see him.

Tuesday we took the kids to Stokes Nature Center up Logan Canyon in the morning and we went up Smithfield Canyon in the afternoon so the kids could wade in the water. James didn’t want to go because he said it wouldn’t be any fun but when we got ready to come home he was the one who wanted to stay.
Wednesday, we went to Salt Lake to visit the church sights. The down town area across from the temple realy look odd about half of the buildings are gone making way for the new church
center. We ate lunch at the ZCMI food court. For some reason they have left that in place even though the rest of the building is now empty. While we were there --- Fouk, who was the Assistant Scout Master in Newarl ward when Chuck McMarrow was there. He joined the church at that time. His now the long term Scoutmaster there and had fifteen scouts with him. They were going on a super activity of climbing in the Teton Mountains. We were really surprised to see him.

Swimming Lessons and Canoe
Isaac and Mariana have been taking swimming lessons this summer, from a young college student in our ward. Both of them have improved dramatically in their swimming ability.
Today we went to the store and bought a canoe. Since we had not had a family vacation yet this summer, we had spoken about what we wanted to do-- go to an amusement park, or do some outdoor activity or go to a city for a day or so. We decided that for the price of those kinds of things, we could get a canoe and then have many future Saturdays of fun. We look forward to trying it out next weekend.
