We got word earlier this week that Harvey's birth father wants to settle. The attorney's are currently trying to work out all the arrangements, but we anticipate that things will finally be resolved.

Harvey can crawl efficiently now so Cally spend all her time just trying to keep up. In a few short days he went from wanting to be held all the time to never wanting to be held. To her disgust, his favorite place in the entire house is the small area behind the toilet. I'm sure the toilet bowl itself will be the most fascinating once he learns to stand.
He also has some bottom teeth and is really starting to enjoy real food.
We're finally having some nice weather. We are down to a few piles of snow and lots of mud. It's hard to believe things can be so muddy when they can be so dry in the summer. We can let the sprinklers run day and night and it hardly seems to wet the ground.
Toby managed to get out of the house a couple of nights ago and was hit by a car. He's got stitches in his head and lots of bruises, but no broken bones this time. He was very lucky. He is at my office with me today sitting under my desk.

Indiana Ice Storm
We have had an ice storm here on Thursday and Friday. Everything got coated with ice. Mariana and Isaac had fun sliding around on the driveway. They were happy because they got out of school early on Thursday and didn't have any school on Friday.

Samuel's Mission e-mail Feb 18, 2008
Everyone:
Well, this was the last full week of the transfer. We'll see if I stay here or not. Anyways, starting with Tuesday last week:
On Tuesday, we visited Melva, who was someone we met tracting. We also taught a couple other people and had Wilshire Ward correlation.
On Wednesday, we tracted a bunch and visited Karla. We're probably going to drop Karla this week. She hasn't come to church all transfer, and she hasn't really been reading or praying much. I'll be sorry to have to do it, though.
On Thursday, we had planning like usual, we tracted a bit, and we visited Santos, who is a fairly recent convert in our area, as well as Karla.
On Friday, we had our normal missionary meeting, we helped Karla move some cabinets and desks around, visited some people we contacted tracting, and we visited and dropped the familia Rios.
On Saturday we tracted a bit, we visited the Aguilars and Sandra, and we contacted some referrals.
On Sunday we had our normal meetings, we contacted a referral, and we taught Miguel.
Today we had a zone barbecue and just generally prepared.

Well, this has been a fairly good week. On Tuesday, we tracted for a while and visited Anne.
Wednesday, we tracted some more, visited Constance Christi, and had Wilshire Correlation meeting. On Thursday, we planned, we tracted, we visited the Familia Rios, and we visited Karla.
On Friday, we had District meeting, tracted, and finally got in contact with some of our referrals. On Saturday I was back in Westchester on splits with Elder Chadwick. He wasn't feeling too hot, so we got out late and visited the Aguilars, and then we went to the Leadership Training Meeting. It was pretty good--I took some notes for the future.
On Sunday, we had church, and then we went to the baptism of one of Elder Vega's old investigators in Huntington Park. We also visited the familia Rios again.
Today we had our Preparation Day stuff, and for our activity we went ice skating, which has set us back a bit, which is why I'm a bit hurried.

Science Olympiad
Isaac went to the regional Science Olympiad competition in Louisville today. Here is a picture of him after competing in the Robot Ramble event. Isaac participated in four events and won medals in three of them. He and his partners got silver medals in herpetology and Write it/Do it, and a bronze medal in Rocks and Minerals. The Madison team did well, coming in second in the regional competition, which qualifies them to go the the state competition again this year.

Elaine's performance
I finally got them up! In the first one she is greeting her adoring fans after the show.
The second is as part of a caterpillar. And the third is as an Indian. (I was a little worried about that role as some of the dance they were doing was a bit stereotypical, but the only reaction from an actual Native American I heard was, "Where'd you get the cool Native American music?"). Anyway, she had a blast, of course. Now we just have to get through Dance Festival and then recital!

Samuel's Mission e-mail Feb 4, 2008
Everyone:
Where has this transfer gone? There's still a couple weeks left, sure, but still... Anyways, starting with Tuesday, we tracted a good deal and visited the familia Vasquez. We've given them the form they need to fill out for their marriage liscense, so it shouldn't be too much longer before Hermana Luz Vasquez can get baptized. Hopefully.
On Wednesday, we tracted some more, visited Anne and talked a bit about her confirmation and the temple, and had Wilshire ward correlation.
On Thursday we planned as usual, we visited Karen again, and we contacted one of our referrals.
On Friday I was on splits with Elder Hoffmeier, my district leader. We did some tracting, had a follow-up appointment with Kathy, someone we met tracting the week before, that went pretty well, and we visited Karla. Karla's is a difficult situation, since she wants to get baptized but hasn't been doing a lot of the things she needs to do to be ready, like going to church regularly and reading the scriptures. We're still working on it, but if she doesn't progress any in the next couple of weeks, we'll have to drop her. I know I'll hate to do it if we have to do it, but I will do what is best for all of the Lord's children in this area.
On Saturday, the entire mission got together at the ward building behind the temple for the broadcast of President Hinckley's funeral. It was, apparently, only the second time in its history that the entire mission was together in one room.
On Sunday, we had church, and I confirmed Anne. In the afternoon we visited a member of the Wilshire ward who's in the hospital, in company with Brother Case, our ward mission leader, and contacted Andres Rios and his wife, a referral we received recently, and taught them.
Today we brought a couple Books of Mormon that the sister in the hospital had asked for to her (we found out she's in the hospital just across the street from our apartment) and we had a hike in what has to be the only place in the mission that you can be a couple miles away from the nearest paved road.

January 31, 2008 It’s now the end of January. It has snowed every other day since the 15th. In between some of the snow has melted but we still have about 12inches on the ground, with more moisture than we have had in several years.
I bought 4 new tires in July from Big O Tire Co. and had Big O do a lube job at the same time. Since then we have had continual vibrations through the steering wheel. I had the front wheels realigned and rebalance three times and it didn’t solve the problem. I took it to Davis Dodge and they replaced the brake on the front wheels. The problem still existed. Davis replaced the brake Calipers twice and finally replaced the master cylinder. It appears the some way oil got into the brake system and the whole front brake system had to be replaced. Finally I took the car to a shop that has a dynamometer. They said that the tires I got from Big O were faulty. After a rather heated discussion with Big O they replaced the two front tires. The vibration went away. Needless to say I will not get tires from Big O again. We have spent about $600.00 on the car in the last months. I guess we can’t complain sinc we have about 146,000 miles on the car at this point.
