Big South Fork River from Above
Our Campsite Along the Banks of the River
Isaac and I went with the scouts for a high adventure trip the last 3 days. We went about 4 hours south to the Kentucky/Tennessee Border. The Big South Fork river flows into lake Cumberland and is in a National Park. The area used to have lots of coal mines but has been a park for many years now and it has reverted to wilderness. We took a 2-day, 19 mile canoe trip down the river, running lots of small rapids and a few bigger ones. We saw and heard plenty of wildlife. The river was filled with little minnows that were easily visible in the clear green water. The tree frogs were deafening at night. A couple of boys heard the warning rattle from a rattlesnake while climbing on rocks beside the river, and Isaac let a baby turtle ride in our boat for a while.
Isaac and I did really well and managed to keep all of our gear (relatively) dry until the very end of the second day. Isaac opted out of the last, biggest and most dangerous rapid, but I decided to try it with one of the other boys. Unfortunately, the current caught us and tipped our canoe as we tried to position ourselves for the run, so I went for a swim and the canoe ran the rapid without us.

Looks like fun! I would have been going down the rapids and swimming with you. Way too fun to resist.
